If you have a smartphone, you can download a free guitar tuner app. There are many of these apps, some better than others, for both iPhone and Android devices. While the app I use cannot “hear” my guitar like a regular tuner (some apps can), it generates a tone for each string so I can tune my guitar by ear. If you have a good ear, this is a valuable tool to have in the event you forget your tuner somewhere. It can even to replace your tuner.
If you don’t have a good ear, here’s a tip to help you develop it. Use the guitar tuner app to tune your guitar, then use your standard tuner and play each string to see if they’re in tune. With enough practice, you’ll develop a keener ear for when your guitar is in and out of tune.
Remember, don’t pay for one of these apps. The free ones work just fine.
