We naturally and logically assume that if we do not have our guitar with us, we cannot practice. We are wrong is making that assumption.
There is actually a lot you can do without your guitar to improve your guitar playing and musical skills. It doesn’t take much and yet it can be very, very helpful.
You can practice in many different situations where you otherwise would just be wasting time doing very little.
Here is one way you can practice away from your guitar. Bring a pick with you everywhere you go. When you’re sitting around waiting for something, take the pick and practicing picking against the seam of your pant leg. You might practice different rhythms, alternate picking, all down strokes or all up strokes. It sounds silly, but it will help you improve your picking technique, which is usually something that is highly neglected or ignored.
Try it and see for yourself how much it can improve your playing.
There’s a lot more to this…but that’s for another day.
